Winemakers Selection Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

An uncharactistically vague description of this Shiraz from Ned that would have otherwise made me overlook this wine. I know you’re limited for space Ned but you can do better than that!

What Ned said:

"Bumper cushiony and wholesome straight Shiraz at a good price; 14.5% alcohol. Bommerangs on the label".

An unusually vague description for this dark horse from Lidl.

It’s a very good Shiraz this. I opened it with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

Purple in the glass with a good nose of plums, blackberries and cigar box. On the palate, the black fruits are complimented well with that same cigar box and notes of chocolate and black peppered spice. It’s also bold with a very good mouthfeel. Not bad at all for £5.99 from Lidl!

Speaking of vagueness, even Lidl’s website does little to promote this quality wine well with the tasting note simply stating:

The ripe, generous fruit combines nicely with savoury notes – both bold and concentrated.

What?! Come on Lidl, you’ve got a little cracker at a bargain of a price here and that’s the best you can do?! To be fair to Lidl, they rate it 88/100 and you also get food pairings and recipe suggestions so they’re on the right track.

If you’re looking for another cracking introduction to Shiraz then try this wine because for £5.99 you really can’t go wrong!
